Island Sights

Prince Edward Island, PEI in short, was named in memory of Prince Edward Augustus, Duke of Kent and Strathearn who was the father of Queen Victoria.

Located in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, PEI is part of the Maritimes, the Atlantic provinces of Canada. It is the smallest province Canada in terms of both size and population.

Island Sights

The island is accessible by air, by sea and via the Confederation Bridge; a 13-kilometer marvel of engineering that connects the west end of the island to the southeastern part of New Brunswick.

PEI capital and largest city is Charlottetown, situated centrally on the island's southern shore. Summerside the second largest city is located about 40 miles northwest of Charlottetown. Both cities are built around large natural harbors.

PEI is known as the "Garden Province", for its fertile soil and low rising rolling hills which are excellent for farming. The island economy is dominated by seasonal industries such as agriculture, tourism, and fishery.

Affected by many weather systems, temperatures on the island, even during the summer are never very hot, but can get very cold, wet and windy during winter months.

The best time to visit the island is during the summer months of July and August, when visitors can take full advantage of the beautiful beaches, golf courses, and drive through the countryside. September and October are excellent for fall foliage viewing.
